How do our Natural Lashes Grow?

So many different elements can effect our Natural Lashes.

Firstly lets talk about how they grow. Did you know that we all shed between 1-5 Lashes every single day of our lives? Our Lashes are so fine that when this happens its usually when we are sleeping or when we are washing our eyes so we usually don't notice them come away. If you wear Lash extensions this is when you will notice the lashes shed as they are larger, darker and longer than natural lashes. Usually if extensions have been applied correctly if you look really closely to a shed extension you will see the natural lash still attached. This is a good thing as your natural lashes have been able to still go through their natural growth cycle keeping your lash line healthy. In a 3-4 month period we all grow a complete new set of natural lashes.

When we look at a lash line up close you can see that the lengths of the lashes are all different. this is the different stages of growth, Anagen, Catagen and Telogen.

As you can see in this picture all the natural lashes are at different stages of growth.

  • Anagen are the baby ones
  • Catagen the intermediate stage
  • Telogen the mature longest lashes

Age also does have a baring on how full or sparse our natural lash line is. You will notice how amazing a 2 year old's lashes are..... long dark and thick! Where as once we get older they get thinner shorter and more sparse.

Now let's discuss lash treatments and the effects these may have.

Mascara - Most of us have all worn mascara. In actual fact some of the worst damage I have seen to natural lashes is from Mascara. Usually from it not being removed correctly and the hair follicles being blocked not allowing growth. So use a great Eye Makup remover and you wont have this issue.

Lash Tints or Dye - This is where we apply tint or Dye to make the lashes darker. This only takes 10-15mins and will last 3 - 8 weeks depending on whether you've had tint or Dye.

Lash Lifts - These are a quick treatment (45mins) and low maintenance. This is where we place your lashes on a rod and curl them to it giving you a beautiful lift. We can also add Tint to create a darker lash line. These only need to be repeated approx every 8-10 weeks.

The only down side to this is if you go somewhere that is not well experienced that your lashes can be over processed and sadly this over curls them and it can be very uncomfortable. With all lash lifts we recommend good aftercare to keep your lashes beautifully hydrated.

Eyelash Extensions - Once again it is all about the experience and qualifications the Lash Artist has. Lash Extensions can take anywhere from 1 and a 1/2 hours through to 3 hours to apply. You will usually need to have a refill at approx 3 weeks after your first application. When extensions are applied in the correct manner lashes remain healthy and strong.

If natural lashes are over extended with Extensions and over weighted it can cause traction alopecia. This is where the natural lash will shed prematurely causing damage to the natural lash follicle, this can be permanent.  It is true that it only takes up to 8 times for this to occur and that follicle just will not grow back :(    This equals a sparse lash line going forward.

So PLEASE research where you go!
